SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) - Homeowners were back in their homes Wednesday night after a gas leak that forced them to evacuate earlier in the afternoon.

At about 12:30 p.m., Spencer Fire Department personnel say an excavation crew hit an underground natural gas line in the 300 block of West 7th Street.

In addition to homes on that block, authorities also evacuated a health center across the street.

Fire officials say a Black Hills Energy crew stopped the leak and are working to replace the broken gas line.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes after 6 p.m.
