NEW YORK -- Clarke Schmidt regrouped in the home dugout after a rough first inning, the Yankees right-hander examining what had allowed the Guardians to jump him for three early runs. His seventh pitch of the evening had landed in the right-field seats, and a few more were hit hard.

Schmidt settled in, as he has done numerous times this season, but the damage was already done. The Yankees’ bats were unable to cover for the early deficit, going quietly most of the evening in a 4-0 loss on Wednesday at Yankee Stadium.

It was just the second time the Yankees have been shut out this season.
