First Prints of Native American life come home to Outer Banks History Center

Telling a gathering at the Outer Banks History (OBHC) Center that the 1590 Theodore DeBry prints of artist John White’s depictions of Native American society “are home at last,” Labame Houston founding member of the theatrical production company Elizabeth R and Company officially donated the 18 prints her company had purchased to the OBHC.

In addition to her work with Elizabeth R and Company, Houston is also the historian for the Roanoke Island Historic Association (RIHA), which produces the historic drama The Lost Colony.

The engravings are based on the John White paintings, which are vibrant in their use of color. Some prints were hand painted but most were rendered in black
