CORNING, NY (WENY) -- On May 20, voters in the Corning Painted Post School District overwhelmingly voted down the district's proposed budget for the upcoming school year.

The nearly $147 million dollar spending plan only garnered 40% of yes votes - failing to reach a needed 60% supermajority to pass. That's because the budget included a tax levy increase of 7.89%, which was far above the state's property tax cap of 3.23% for the school fiscal year.

Under a second vote scheduled for June 17, the budget now requires just a simple majority of over 50%.
