Stormwater and drainage is a serious problem in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

The city of Birmingham is getting closer to finalizing the Fiscal Year 2026 budget . The proposed budget is $591,278,791. However, the amended budget for FY 25 was $581,960,221.

Councilor Crystal Smitherman represents District 6, she told WVTM 13 the more than $9 million increase is because of a surplus.

Only three residents showed up to the meeting, two of them spoke before council. They want the city to prioritize stormwater and drainage issues, road paving, and enhancing parks.

One of the residents who spoke is from the Central Park neighborhood. She talked about the constant issue with storm drain covers that need to be repaired.
