BAKERSFIELD, CA (KBAK/KBFX) — The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, known as the "100 Deadliest Days," sees a sharp increase in fatal crashes involving teenage drivers, according to AAA.
Gianella Ghiglino, a spokesperson for AAA, explained that the rise is due to teens having more free time during the summer months. "Really, what we're seeing is teens out of school. So they have more free time to be out. Which in turn sometimes, having more time, can lead to doing things that are unsafe," said Ghiglino.
Statistics reveal that 60% of all teen crashes involve some form of distraction, with other contributing factors including speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.
