When Jerry Skidmore took the job as baseball coach at Webster County this season, he had one goal that he wanted the Highlanders to reach twice -- beat rival Richwood.

Making the Class A state tournament didn’t even seem a possibility for Skidmore, who coached the Highlanders’ track and field team last season while the nine on the diamond didn’t win a single game.

In 2025, Webster County is among the four teams, joining Madonna, Gilmer County and East Hardy, that compose the tournament field.

“We’re a little bit of a Cinderella story,” said Skidmore, whose Highlanders posted four wins over Richwood this season, including two in the Region 3 tournament on the way to a 13-13 record.
