NEW CASTLE, Ind. — Two men were arrested after multiple arson fires in New Castle this week that caused serious damage to a park.

The 32- and 24-year-old suspects face preliminary charges of arson (two counts) and criminal mischief, police said. Formal charges had not yet been filed as of early June 5.

(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects in cases until formal charges are filed by prosecutors.)

Around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, New Castle Police Department officers were called to a reported fire near Cherrywood and M avenues . Additional fires were found in the area and determined to be arson, the department said.

Police said the fires caused significant damage to new turf around playground equipment at Baker Park.
