The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office held a townhall Wednesday to discuss the changes they want to see in the state’s mental health diversion program.

The program was created to help individuals with mental health disorders receive treatment instead of facing criminal charges, but they say criminals are taking advantage of it and using it to get out of jail.

"I believe that people deserve to get the treatment that they need to get better,” said Sacramento District Attorney Thien Ho. “Right now, mental health diversion is being used not as a shield, but a sword. It's being abused."

The conversation was sparked after an arrest in a recent deadly stabbing in Fair Oaks.
