As novelty holidays go, National Donut Day seems pretty frivolous, although very tasty. The fried confections actually served a historical purpose, with Salvation Army volunteers boosting troop morale in World War I by serving the treats, thus becoming known as “Doughnut Dollies.”
In 1938, the Salvation Army arranged for the first Friday of June to be recognized as National Donut Day.

Celebrations this Friday include the Salvation Army's very own Donut Girl, Sally, at Sandy's Donuts and Coffee Shop in downtown Fargo from 8 to 9:30 a.m. to give out free donuts to those making a purchase. She'll be at the south Fargo location from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
