Every now and then a person is liable to come across a letter to the editor decrying Trumps cuts in spending for this important program or another. Of course every program that is being cut is essential and helps someone. And it's not just federal spending for individuals that is being cut. Disbursements to states, schools and other deserving entities are also being cut.

The problem is that under our present system the numbers have to add up somehow or other. Even that paragon of leftist virtue, Gov. Tim Walz, is proposing cuts to important and deserving programs in Minnesota. Under the system we have now, Minnesota is running out of money.
