KEMPNER, Texas (KWTX) - June is Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month, and it’s a struggle many Central Texans deal with.

Every day, countless Central Texas veterans and service members struggle with PTSD.

Mason Hymer is a combat veteran in his last few days of service.

“I’m an infantryman by trade but for the past 2 years I got to work at the Phantom Forge Center as a suicide prevention trainer,” said Hymer.

A calling he found after injuring his back on deployment and struggling to readjust to life back home.

“Behind the scenes, I was just falling apart,” said Hymer. “One night I just finally had enough and was very drunk and I was bound and determined to take myself out of this world.”
