Harris County Sheriff's Office

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump has filed a federal lawsuit on behalf of Eboni Pouncy, a Houston woman who, being mistaken for an intruder, was shot five times by sheriff’s office deputies inside of her friend’s apartment last year.

When Pouncy was struck around 2 a.m. Feb. 3 last year, resident Laronda Berry told her to call the police. That’s when she realized who had actually fired the shots that left Pouncy injured.

“Imagine calling the police to realize it’s the police hurting you,” Berry said during a press conference last year.

The two had broken Berry’s apartment window to get inside after losing an apartment key. A neighbor heard the glass shatter and informed the deputies that were already in the apartment complex responding to a different call.
