President Donald Trump issued a new travel suspension on June 4, banning individuals from 12 countries from entering the U.S. He is also imposing travel restrictions on people from seven additional nations.

In the White House proclamation, Trump cited that the travel bans are a matter of national security.

Trump stated that he had evaluated the different risks associated with individuals entering the U.S. on immigrant visas compared to nonimmigrant visas.

In the proclamation, Trump said those admitted on immigrant visas obtain lawful permanent resident status, which may present national security or public safety concerns different from those posed by nonimmigrants. The U.S. grants lawful permanent residents more long-term rights compared to nonimmigrants.
