OKLAHOMA CITY — It took some odd bounces, an even weirder at-bat and another sterling effort from Texas softball pitcher Teagan Kavan, but the Longhorns are one win away from their first national championship.

Reese Atwood, the Longhorns’ All-American catcher, shook out of a Women’s College World Series slump at just the right time with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift Texas to a 2-1 victory in the game one of the best-of-three championship series at Devon Park.

The second game starts at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“A lot of things happening for a 2-1 ballgame for sure,” Texas coach Mike White said. “It could have gone either way, it’s a game of inches. Fortunately, we were able to come out on top of it.”
