OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) -
A resounding round of applause was the response in 2021 when Ottumwa’s city council first approved a proclamation recognizing June as Pride Month.
It has passed unanimously every year since then... until this week.
One citizen (who did not state their name) spoke at Tuesday’s council meeting, “I’d like to respectfully oppose the proclamation declaring June as ‘Pride month’. “
Multiple people spoke out against the proclamation saying, “...being black is not a choice, Alzheimer’s is not a choice, battered children is not a choice -.”
Ottumwa’s Mayor: “And being gay isn’t a choice either.”
Council member Galloway responded: “Thank you. “
