DENVER (KDVR) -- Manzanola United Methodist Church in Otero County has been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The church is being recognized due to its "significant connection to the social history of the Centennial State" and its "importance to Black history and remarkable architecture," historical society History Colorado announced Thursday.

“History Colorado is proud to invest in the preservation of this historic Black church so it can remain a living testament to the power of community, a place of mutual aid during economic challenges, and a demonstration of humanity and resilience in the face of adversity," said Dawn DiPrince, president and CEO of History Colorado and state historic preservation officer, in a statement.
