MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -The Dane County Humane Society is warning the public to watch out for turtles in the roadways this time of year, after its wildlife center admitted seven injured turtles in just over a 24 hour period.

Two turtles were admitted to the DCHS Wildlife Center on Tuesday, followed by five more on Wednesday, DCHS staff reported. Two more are also scheduled to be admitted on Thursday.

During the warmer months, more turtles are out and about and cross the roads in search of food, breeding opportunities, or nesting spots to lay eggs.

DCHS explained too many turtles being run over by vehicles can result in significant declines in Wisconsin’s turtle population, since the animals require many years to grow large enough to breed, and the loss of any adult turtle of breeding age
