NEW YORK — Two FDNY EMTs received the department’s top EMS award for the rescue of two teenage boys from drowning off Coney Island Beach on July 6, 2024.

During the FDNY’s Medal Day ceremony , Black and Tarnapolsky were awarded the department’s top EMS recognition, the Christopher J. Prescott Medal, named after EMT Christopher Prescott who died in the line of duty in 1994.

EMTs Amber Black and Mitchell Tarnapolsky from Station 43 in Queens were working the Summer Gator Detail when they responded to a call for two teenagers drowning.

After spotting the teens in distress approximately 100 to 200 yards offshore, Tarnapolsky entered the water while Black provided communication to additional responding resources and was ready to assist Tarnapolsky.
