The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert on June 3 about a ground beef product that tested positive for E. coli. The product was distributed to Whole Foods Markets and other distributor locations in Illinois, among other states.

A public health alert was issued instead of a recall because the products are no longer available for purchase.

Which products are affected?

The health alert warns about the 1-lb "85% lean 15% fat" packages of organic ground beef manufactured by Organic Rancher on May 22 and 23. The products have "Use or Freeze By" dates of May 19 and May 20, and bear the establishment number "EST. 4027" inside the USDA mark of inspection.
