Kern County Fire Department

A brush fire that broke out overnight Wednesday had grown to 220 acres Thursday morning, prompting evacuation orders for residents in the Digier Canyon and Lebec areas.

The Fort Fire was just 5% contained as water-dropping aircraft worked the scene. Kern County fire officials said additional aircraft in the form of retardant-dropping air tankers arrived Thursday morning.

The fire began just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday near Lebec and promptly spread, triggering evacuation orders for residents south west of the 5 Freeway and north of Temescal Drive and Digier Road. The evacuation map is here .
