QUINCY (WGEM) - Adams County officials explained housing crisis is a leading factor in higher property taxes.

Many Adams County residents are voicing concerns with their property tax bills this year. Adams County officials believe the situation comes down to the housing problem in the county.

“I don’t think anybody’s happy with a higher tax bill or paying the property tax bill in general,” Quincy Township Assessor Josh Ayres said.

Ayres explained his office assesses houses based on one-third of the value of the property. After that, a 7% property tax is implemented.

The problem, according to Ayres, is the fact that in recent years, a shortage of housing has led to properties being sold above asking price.
