Supreme Court Cites First Amendment, Exempts Catholic Charity From Unemployment Tax

The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously held Thursday that Wisconsin violated the First Amendment by denying a religious tax exemption to a Catholic charitable organization because it does not proselytize and serves people of all faiths.

In a decision written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the high court threw out a Wisconsin Supreme Court decision denying an exemption to Catholic Charities Bureau on the grounds that it was not operating "primarily for religious purposes."
