RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — As the weather warms up for central North Carolina, the state has seen an increase in bear sightings in an unlikely region, according to officials in multiple counties.
The City of Clinton said a bear was spotted in the city's limits Thursday morning in the area of College Street and Devane Street. Several miles down I-40, Cary Animal Services said a black bear had been seen within town limits the week prior.
The below map from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission shows a trend over recent decades in which the land bears occupy in the state has progressively grown inward from the west and east toward the Piedmont and Triangle areas. Officials said bears typically prefer large, uninhabited woodlands or swamplands with dense cover.
