LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - Two Chinese nationals are accused of smuggling a dangerous fungus into the U.S. through the Detroit Metro Airport (DTW) last summer.

The FBI said the fungus is described as a ‘potential agroterrorism weapon.’

It’s known as Fusarium Graminearum, and it could attack wheat, barley, corn, and rice. It could even sicken livestock and people.

Although Michigan State University professor Martin Chilvers said it is distributed worldwide.

“It’s already here in the U.S. So, in that sense it’s not a major threat. The problem is that it could be a little bit different to what we already have here,” said Chilvers.

That’s why Chilvers said it’s so important for it to be brought in the proper way, under regulated permits.
