Elon Musk has taken credit for Donald Trump’s election victory , saying the president would have lost to Kamala Harris without his support.

He made the remarks after the president accused his former close ally of suffering from “Trump derangement syndrome”, signalling the official collapse of their once warm relationship.

“Elon and I had a great relationship,” Mr Trump told reporters in the Oval Office during a sit-down with Friedrich Merz, Germany’s new chancellor, on Thursday. “I don’t know if we will anymore.”

It represented the president’s first public denunciation of Mr Musk since the Tesla boss began trashing his “big, beautiful bill” and encouraging Republicans to vote against it.
