A former Indiana death row inmate convicted of killing three people in Warrick County in 1996 has reportedly died in prison.

John Matthew Stephenson, 61, died on May 27 "soon after suffering a heart attack while playing basketball," an obituary states .

A spokeswoman for the Indiana Department of Correction couldn't confirm his death on Wednesday, and two others didn't respond to requests for comment. He was reportedly last at Miami Correctional Facility, the spokeswoman told the Courier & Press, but neither the Miami nor Allen county coroners could confirm Stephenson's death when reached on Thursday.

The birthday in the obituary matches that of Stephenson. His "earliest possible release date" in IDOC records also coincides with the date of death in the obituary.
