A 27-year-old Belmont man accused of chasing a person into Brighton, then smashing their car with a hatchet , surrendered on criminal charges last week and is set to go before a judge for a dangerousness hearing Thursday, police said.

Andrew Oprian is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and malicious destruction of property over $1,200 on a warrant issued out of Brighton District Court, Boston Police said . He will appear there for a dangerousness hearing at 2 p.m. Thursday.

At around 11:45 p.m. on Friday, May 16, Boston police responded to the area of 1032 Commonwealth Ave. in Brighton for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Police say Oprian chased a person in his gray pickup truck at a high speed, causing them to crash.
