JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The governors of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina joined forces on Wednesday, requesting state management of red snapper and other reef fishes in the South Atlantic Ocean.
In a letter to the U.S. Department of Commerce signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, the governors called out the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries and its Amendment 59 plan aimed at preventing overfishing of red snapper.
The trio of governors claim red snapper is no longer overfished and requests an Exempted Fishing Permit for state management of red snapper and other reef fishes in the South Atlantic.
