An inmate being held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center in Gretna died on Thursday, a day after authorities say he was taken to a hospital after experiencing a medical emergency, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

The Jefferson Parish Coroner's Office identified the man as Reginald McGee, 43.

McGee's cause of death was not immediately available. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday morning, the coroner's office said.

McGee, of Metairie, had been held at the Gretna jail since April 10 when he was remanded by a judge for violating a condition of his bond, according to Jefferson Parish court records.

He had tested positive for narcotics and was serving a 60-day sentence in the jail for contempt of court while awaiting trial on charges including possession of cocain
