Michigan has reported 497 cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in 2025, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

According to a June 5 news release from the MDHHS, Tthe rise in pertussis cases in Michigan is linked to a decline in DTaP vaccination rates, with only 72.5% of children receiving their recommended doses by the end of 2024, down from 79% in 2014.

“If you or your child has symptoms of whooping cough, isolate the infected person and seek medical treatment, especially if there are signs of respiratory distress,” advised Kelly Girard, DHD4 Nursing Director.

Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory disease that spreads through coughing or sneezing. It can also be transmitted by touching contaminated objects such as tissues or cups.
