DANNEMORA, N.Y. (WCAX) - Thursday marks 10 years since a prison break and manhunt in New York’s North Country that made national headlines.

Two convicted killers broke out of the Clinton Correctional facility in Dannemora, kicking off a three-week, $20 million manhunt.

The night of June 5, 2015, Richard Matt and David Sweat made their escape from the maximum-security prison. They were discovered missing on the morning of June 6.

On June 12, prison seamstress Joyce Mitchell was arrested and accused of plotting with Matt and Sweat. Prison guard Gene Palmer was also arrested for his role in helping the killers escape on June 24.

Two days later, Richard Matt was shot and killed by authorities in Franklin County, New York.
