SportsCenter anchor Jay Harris has announced he has prostate cancer and must undergo surgery immediately.

“I’m having surgery on Tuesday,” Harris revealed on Thursday, June 5, during an episode of Good Morning America. “I’ll be away from SportsCenter for about a month to recover. And then I’m coming back better than ever.”

However, the ESPN star says he’s “optimistic” about his diagnosis because his doctor made it clear during his last scan that “nothing has spread.” Sports fans and viewers have come to love Harris, who has worked at ESPN since 2003. He hopes in sharing his story, he can inspire more men to get proactive about their health and break the stigma that men don’t discuss their wellness checkups as often as women.
