KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Tennessee Summer Food Program has started, offering parents a way to get their kids a meal during the summer when school is not in session.
According to state data, one in four Tennessee children face hunger every day. The program aims to combat that, providing free meals and snacks to help children in low-income areas stay fed and healthy.
The program was started by Congress in 1968, and now operates as a partnership between the USDA Food and Nutrition Service, the Tennessee Department of Human Services (TDHS) and community-based organizations.
That being said, there are several counties in East Tennessee without Summer Food Service Program locations. The state’s advice is to check out this assistance page , which outlines programs like SNAP.
