CLEVELAND (WJW) -- It’s impossible to know how any of us would respond in a true moment of crisis.

But for the men and women honored Thursday morning by the American Red Cross of Northeast Ohio, instinct took over and lives were saved.

In a downtown Cleveland ballroom, applause and admiration were on full display as the Red Cross recognized a group of ordinary people who made extraordinary decisions when it mattered most.

Among them: Dorian Pace, a Cleveland Heights bus driver whose routine day took a terrifying turn earlier this year when his bus suddenly burst into flames.

“Truthfully, just keep my faith in God,” Pace said.

In that moment, he acted quickly by guiding every student on board to safety and making sure no one was left behind.
