A 1.3-mile portion of Federal Highway in downtown Boca Raton is set to be remodeled in an attempt to create a safer environment.
“It’s primarily a bicycle and pedestrian improvement project,” Frank Panellas, the project manager and engineer, said during a recent public meeting providing an update to Boca Raton residents.
The Florida Department of Transportation, which is conducting the $5.5 million project, detailed during the meeting how it will change this segment of Federal Highway, or U.S. 1, including by:
— Eliminating lanes and bringing both the north and south sides of the streets from three lanes each to two, allowing for the creation of wider sidewalks, landscape strips and separate, buffered bike lanes.
