SYRACUSE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana’s environmental management agency has extended an air quality alert and Michigan has added its own through Friday due to smoke from Canadian wildfires.

Larger cities under the advisory include Fort Wayne and South Bend in Indiana, and Detroit in Michigan.

Indiana counties under the advisory as of Thursday afternoon were Adams, Allen, Cass, De Kalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Blackford, Huntington, Jay, Kosciusko, La Porte, Lagrange, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, Steuben, Wabash, Wells and Whitley.

The smoke was expected to affect active children and adults, and people with respiratory conditions such as asthma. Monitoring for symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and chest tightness is also recommended, especially for people with heart
