EVADALE, Texas — A good Samaritan helped a Jasper County Sheriff’s deputy restrain a man who resisted arrest during a drug-related traffic stop Wednesday evening in Evadale.

The deputy stopped a vehicle around 8:20 p.m. on FM 1131 for a defective equipment violation. The occupants were identified as Joshua Stimits, 43, and Chassity McGurk, 42, both of Buna.

After receiving consent to search the vehicle, the deputy found what was identified as methamphetamines.

Both Stimits and McGurk denied knowledge of the drugs and were arrested for possession of a controlled substance, a state jail felony.

During the arrest, Stimits began to actively resist. A bystander assisted the deputy in securing him.

He was also charged with resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor.
