TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Despite receiving overwhelming support in the Florida Legislature, lawmakers elected Thursday not to override a veto from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to repeal the state's so-called "Free Kill" law.
The bipartisan bill would have repealed part of the existing law, which excludes certain people from recovering damages for medical negligence resulting in death.
Under current law, families cannot sue for non-economic damages like pain and suffering when someone who is unmarried, over 25 and has no kids under 25 dies due to medical malpractice.
Florida House Speaker Daniel Perez told reporters Thursday that while he disagreed with the governor's veto, the legislature would not be moving forward with a veto override this session.
