The U.S. Brig Niagara arrived Thursday afternoon at a shipyard in Maine, where it will receive needed repairs.

It's anticipated that the ship will spend a year there.

A press release from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission stated that the flagship will undergo a $5 million overhaul, including structural replacements such as framing, planking and decking as well as upgrades to its engines, transmissions and electrical system.

A fixture on Lake Erie since 1990, the Brig Niagara has been out of commission since 2023.

It is slated to make a return to Erie in July of 2026, in time to celebrate the country's 250th birthday.
