TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) — State health officials have issued a stream advisory for a stretch of the Walnut River near El Dorado after untreated wastewater began leaking into the water.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) said the advisory covers the portion of the river from where it passes under U.S. Highway 54 south of El Dorado to its confluence with Turkey Creek.

According to KDHE, the leak is due to a damaged pipe discharging untreated wastewater into the river. City crews are working to stop the flow and repair the pipe.

Residents are advised to avoid entering the water in that area, as elevated levels of E. Coli and other contaminants may be present.

The advisory will remain in effect until water conditions are considered safe again.
