GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KSNW) — Two trumpeter swan cygnets hatched last week at Lee Richardson Zoo, marking the latest success in a national conservation effort, the zoo says.
The hatchlings are the third and fourth for swan pair Abigail and Will. The downy gray-and-white cygnets are already making short swims around the zoo’s Duck Pond alongside their parents, near the flamingo habitat and drive-through route.
Trumpeter swans were nearly hunted to extinction and continue to be part of recovery programs. Offspring from Abigail and Will have been released in Oregon as part of a reintroduction effort led by the AZA, Zoo Idaho, the Trumpeter Swan Society, and the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the zoo said.
This year’s cygnets are expected to contribute in similar ways—one will be rele
