BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - After years of sitting vacant, Burlington’s former YMCA is a step closer to transforming into needed housing for the Queen City.
Developer Bruce Baker says crews this week have been cleaning and recycling materials inside the building. “We’ve been doing all the stuff you have to do inside the building,” he said.
Now, crews are moving outside, preserving the historic structure on the corner of College Street and taking down sections of the roof. “Construction is a slow build, especially on a really challenging site like this. It’s going to take about two years to do the whole thing. But you will see immediate activity in the next month, where you see the flat roof portion taken down,” Baker said.
Initial plans for a hotel changed last year and now call for a six-
