Two decades after his first conviction and a week after his presidential pardon, old relationships that cost former Gov. John G. Rowland his political future continue to reverberate.

Mia Matthews, ex-wife of Palm Beach real estate swindler and Rowland friend Robert Matthews, was in federal court Thursday in Bridgeport where, after pleading for leniency, she was sentenced to probation and fined $6,000 for evading $2.75 million in taxes with her former husband.

Mia Matthews’ crime was a small part of Robert Matthews’ extensive pattern of real estate frauds and tax evasions that brought him to the attention of federal law enforcement in the 1990s when he was trying to develop real estate in Rowland’s hometown of Waterbury.
