TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV/Gray Florida Capital Bureau) - The Florida House of Representatives honored former Speaker John Thrasher Thursday with a moment of silence.

Thrasher was a member of the Florida House from 1992 to 2000, serving as the House Speaker for those final two years. He also served in the Senate before being appointed to be Florida State University’s president.

Thrasher died in Orlando last week at the age of 81 after a battle with cancer.

On Thursday, current speaker Daniel Perez reflected on Thrasher’s time in the House.

“He championed education reform, public safety and environmental conservation and helped shape major institutions including law schools at FAMU and FIU, and the College of Medicine at Florida State University,” Perez said.
