FARGO — After a national search, community meetings and in-person interviews, the selection committee for Fargo's next fire chief has selected Gary Lorenz, the current Grand Forks fire chief, for the post.

The city received 15 applications for the position after former Chief Steve Dirksen announced he would retire in mid-May. The finalists for the position were all Fargo Fire Department veterans: Lorenz and two current division chiefs, Tim Binfet and Craig Nelson.

Lorenz has been the fire chief in Grand Forks since 2018 and was with the Fargo Fire Department for 28 years prior to that.
