HOUSTON (KIAH) — The summertime means that more Houston kids will be out at pools, beaches and lakes, and the need for water safety for children is necessary.

The YMCA of Greater Houston knows that water safety is needed for children to prevent tragic drownings. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of death among children ages 5 to 14.

But it’s getting the water safety to the communities that need it. Only 64% of African-American children, 45% of Hispanic/Latino children, and 40% of white children have low or no swimming ability, according to the USA Swimming Foundation.
