McDOWELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Two men have been arrested after allegedly stealing from the graves of veterans during the Memorial Day weekend.

Michael Underwood and Grantlen Crigger, McDowell County police said, are accused of stealing bronze markers from five veterans’ graves.

Police said the markers were earned through overseas battlefield deployment.

Police said the two suspects each face five counts of grand larceny.

“I’m very proud of my guys,” McDowell County Sheriff James Muncy said. “That’s great work on their part.”

Muncy said he is a veteran himself and said the crime and arrests “hit close to home.”

“Being a veteran, this really meant a lot to me, seeing this wrapped up so close, and I know it has for the families, as well,” Muncy said.
