A welfare check call ended with a deputy-involved shooting in Kernville Thursday morning. The alleged suspect, a 28-year-old man, was arrested after being taken to the hospital.

The Kern County Sheriff’s Office said on June 5, 2025, at around 3:30 a.m., deputies were called to a welfare check call regarding 28-year-old Colin Kegley near Big Blue Road and Piute Drive.

When deputies arrived, they tried to talk to Kegley by phone but he would not disclose his location. Deputies found Kegley on the roof of a business, armed with a rifle.

A deputy-involved shooting happened.

Kegley was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries.
