GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman has been acquitted of a felony charge related to the car crash that ultimately killed Michigan State Police Trooper Joel Popp.

Popp was killed on Jan. 24, 2024, during a traffic stop involving Brooke Allen’s vehicle on I-75 near Birch Run. He was outside of his patrol vehicle and had just laid down road flares when he was struck by a vehicle driven by 81-year-old Duncan Erving.

Allen was intoxicated on methamphetamines at the time and was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, a felony charge with a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. Instead, she was convicted of a misdemeanor charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
